Say Better: How Men Should Listen

How Men Should Listen

Speaking up, shutting up, and why we need better conversations about gender.

There’s a difference between listening and waiting to speak. There’s also a difference between speaking up and talking over. And when it comes to supporting women, there’s a difference between standing up and lifting up. The socialisation of the genders means that we’ve been primed to communicate in fundamentally different ways, but that doesn’t mean we can’t fix it.

Good Shout's Gav Owen is a man, and he's designed this session is for other men who genuinely want to get it right, but aren't always sure what "right" looks like. This session offers a practical, honest conversation about tackling everyday misogyny, the moments that matter, and what it actually sounds (and feels) like when men listen brilliantly. In 90 minutes, we'll cover:

  • What genuine listening feels like, and why it's harder than it sounds.

  • Why so many men opt out of conversations about gender, and why that's a problem.

  • How to spot and challenge everyday misogyny without making it about you.

  • Springboards for better conversations around gender
